The seed share program is a volunteer project of Extension Master Gardeners℠ of McDowell County along with other McDowell County citizens who are passionate about seed saving and sharing.
How it works
Anyone can join Seed Share. Take only the seed you plan to plant in a season. There may be a limit on the number of specific seed you may take if the seed is popular, difficult to find, or expensive.
There will be envelopes provided to put the seed that you want to take with space to write details about the seed. There will be commercial seed initially that has been donated by seed companies or purchased.
If you are knowledgeable about saving seed, you are encouraged to return seed at the end of the season to replenish the supply. The non-commercial seed that is donated by community members will be identified as such and located in a separate section of the catalog.
To coincide with Seed Share at the Marion Library, Extension Master Gardeners and the steering committee of Seed Share offer classes on starting with seeds, propagation, and seed saving as well as other gardening programs.
Mission Statement
Seed Share at the Marion Library operates as a free-to-use, hands-on educational resource to enable the McDowell County community to learn about gardening, seed saving, and native plant life. The seed library will strive to provide borrowers with the materials and informational resources necessary to get started with home gardening and create a circulation of varieties of heirloom and native plants.
Seed Share at the Marion Library is a joint program sponsored by the McDowell County Library Marion Branch, Friends’ of the Library, and Master Gardeners of McDowell County.
