4-H Pullet Project Registration Now Open!

4-H Youth Poultry Opp.

McDowell County youth have an exciting opportunity to get hands-on agricultural experience through the 2025 4-H Pullet Project. This project allows young people to purchase baby chicks, raise them responsibly, and showcase their hard work during the McDowell Junior Livestock Show, happening August 1–2, 2025.

What Is the Pullet Project?

The 4-H Pullet Project is designed to teach youth ages 5–18 the fundamentals of poultry care, responsibility, and animal science. Participants will purchase a small group of pullet chicks—young female or male chickens—and raise them over the summer, learning important skills such as:

  • Feeding and nutrition

  • Clean housing and biosecurity

  • Daily care and handling

  • Record-keeping

  • Poultry showmanship

This hands-on learning experience helps youth develop responsibility, confidence, and a deeper understanding of where their food comes from.

Show Your Pullets at the Livestock Show

The project culminates in the opportunity to show the pullets at the McDowell Junior Livestock Show in early August. Youth will present their birds in a judged event that highlights their hard work and poultry knowledge. Ribbons, prizes, and recognition await participants, but the most rewarding part is the pride of raising healthy, happy animals from chick to show bird.

How to Get Involved

Enrollment in the Pullet Project is open now through the McDowell County 4-H program. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged. Participation is open to both new and experienced 4-H members.
