McDowell County farmers who were impacted by Hurricane Helene now have an opportunity to revitalize their farmland through a special Cover Crop Restoration Program. This initiative is exclusive to residents of McDowell County, North Carolina, and aims to support agricultural recovery and soil health improvement through the use of cover crops, fertilizer, and lime.

Program Overview

This restoration program is designed to assist farmers in restoring land that may have suffered from erosion, nutrient loss, or degradation due to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The program provides selected applicants with:

  • Cover crop seed
  • Fertilizer
  • Agricultural lime

These materials are provided to help replenish and stabilize farmland soils, promote long-term productivity, and enhance sustainability.

Who Is Eligible?

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be a resident of McDowell County, NC
  • Be a farmer who experienced agricultural impacts from Hurricane Helene
  • Submit a completed application by the deadline

How to Apply

Interested farmers must submit an application to be considered for this program. No walk-ins or verbal requests will be accepted. The application is the first and only step to qualify for receiving the free restoration materials.

Selection and Notification

Applications will be reviewed after the May 20 deadline. Selected participants will be contacted directly by a representative from the N.C. Cooperative Extension in McDowell County with further details and distribution instructions.
