Mountain Valley Resource Conservation & Development Council's Mitigation Cost-Share Assistance Program offers 50% reimbursement for residents within an 8-county region (includes McDowell) to hire out a contractor or rent equipment to reduce their home's risk of ignition from wildfire.  Preference is given to homes or communities within a moderate to high wildfire risk area.

This program can assist residents living in McDowell, but also Buncombe, Madison, Henderson, Polk, Transylvania, Cleveland, and Rutherford counties.

Mitigation tasks include:
  • Tree and brush thinning
  • Dead vegetation removal
  • Pruning trees & shrubs
  • Cleaning gutters
To receive cost-share assistance, residents must apply and sign a reimbursement agreement before the project begins.

Projects must be within 100 feet of the home or 10 feet from the driveway.  Cost-share reimbursements are offered until funds run out.  Reimbursements are capped at $2,000.
