What to Bring/Wear:
This cleanup will be more challenging than our typical ones due to the nature of the trash we are removing. Much of it is debris related to Hurricane Helene. There will be small and bulky items to pick up over a vast expanse of area around the creek.

We will be on land, but many will also be wading in and around the creek, so please prepare with the following:

  • Please wear closed-toe shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty.
    • If you’re wearing waders, you will put them on instead of your shoes.
  • Please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty and possibly wet.
  • If you plan on wading in the creek with our hip waders, please prepare appropriately:
    • Wear pants with belt loops to help keep the waders up OR at least bring a belt or a fanny pack or something. If you don’t, it’s okay, the waders just don’t stay up great on their own.
  • Bring a full water bottle. We will have water in a container to refill your water bottle.
  • Towel and change of clothes (optional but highly recommended).
  • Day pack to hold your personal belongings (optional).

What is Provided:

  • All clean up materials – trash grabbers, gloves, and bags.
  • A limited number of waders for those who would like to clean up in the creek. (Water will be below mid-thigh.)
  • Water to refill your water bottle.
  • Wrapped snacks (granola bars, peanuts, etc.)
  • Sunscreen, bug spray, basic first aid, and hand sanitizer.
  • Instruction before and during the cleanup activity.
  • Information about the Catawba Riverkeeper.

If you plan to bring young family members or friends, please note that this cleanup is not recommended for children under the age of 12 due to the nature of river cleanups. All youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult throughout the duration of the event.

Old Fort suffered serious damage to the town as a result of Hurricane Helene. The community is working hard to get things back in order and we want to help those efforts.

Mill Creek is an important creek of the Catawba River and provides essential urban natural habitat, recreation through trails and parks, and becomes the drinking water source for our neighbors to the south. The Catawba River’s main channel spans 225 miles in length and the Catawba-Wateree Basin encompasses 8,900 miles of smaller waterways throughout 26 counties in two states (NC/SC). We are truly thankful you are donating your time and service to enhance the health of our shared water network!

Thank you for your support of our shared waterways! We look forward to a couple of fun hours of impactful work together!
