If your farm suffered losses from Hurricane Helene, there is still time to apply for financial assistance through the USDA Block Grant Disaster Assistance Program. The application deadline has been extended to June 12, 2026, providing producers with additional time to gather documentation and submit an application.
Many farmers across Western North Carolina experienced significant impacts from Hurricane Helene, including damage to crops, pastures, fencing, farm roads, livestock infrastructure, equipment, and other agricultural resources. This program was established to help producers recover from those losses and continue moving their operations forward.
One of the most common things I hear from producers after disasters is, “I wasn't sure if I qualified,” or “I didn't think it was worth applying.” My advice is simple: if your operation experienced losses related to Hurricane Helene, take the time to review the program and submit an application. Assistance programs like this are designed specifically to help agricultural operations recover, but they can only help if producers apply.
Who Should Consider Applying?
Agricultural producers who experienced losses associated with Hurricane Helene should review the eligibility requirements and consider submitting an application. Even if you have received assistance through other programs, you may still qualify for support through this disaster assistance initiative.
Four qualifying areas for assistance include:
- Future Economic Loss
- Farm Structures, Roads, Bridges and Culverts
- Market Loss
- Forestry Loss
Why Apply?
Disaster recovery can place significant financial strain on any operation. Assistance received through this program may help:
- Offset eligible losses
- Support farm recovery efforts
- Reduce the financial burden of rebuilding
- Strengthen the long-term viability of agricultural operations
Even if you are uncertain about your eligibility, it is worth investigating. The application process may require some time and documentation, but the potential benefits can be substantial.
Don't Wait Until the Last Minute
With the deadline now extended to June 12, 2026, producers have additional time to complete the application process. However, waiting until the final days can create unnecessary stress and may leave little time to address questions or gather required records.
Producers are encouraged to:
- Review eligibility requirements now
- Gather supporting documentation
- Submit applications as soon as possible
- Reach out for assistance if needed
