Getting Connected: Free Wi-Fi & Digital Device Resources

In today's digital world, having reliable internet access and a working device isn’t a luxury—it’s an absolute necessity. Whether you need to apply for a job, study for a class, or simply stay in touch with family, McDowell County has several local resources designed to help you bridge the digital gap.

Here is a guide to finding free Wi-Fi, public computer labs, and affordable device programs right in our community.

Where to Find Free Wi-Fi Access

The Public Library

  • McDowell Library (Marion): Located at 90 West Court Street. They are open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:30am to 5:30pm; Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to 7pm; and Saturday from 11am to 5pm. Contact them at 828-652-3858.
  • McDowell Library (Old Fort): Located at 65 East Mitchell Street. Their hours are Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to 7pm; Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 5:30pm; and Saturday from 11am to 5pm. Contact them at 828-668-7111.

The library has boosted their wi-fi signal to reach the outdoor areas of both libraries.

  • McDowell Library Bookmobile: If you can't make it to a physical branch, the Bookmobile brings services directly to various community locations. Call 828-652-3858 to check the schedule for stops at the McDowell County Schools Central Office, as well as Eastfield, East Marion, Glenwood, Marion, Pleasant Garden, Nebo, North Cove, and Old Fort schools.

Local Businesses

  • Ingenious Coffee: Stop by 140 South Main Street, Marion, to log on. They offer Wi-Fi access Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm. Call 828-559-2370 for more details.
  • Ingles Supermarket Cafe: Located at 625 West Henderson Street, Marion. They offer some of the most flexible hours in the area, open Sunday through Saturday from 6am to 11pm. Reach them at 828-652-8588.

Public Computer Labs: On-Site Device Access

If you do not own a computer, you can visit a local public computer lab to access the internet, type up documents, or complete online tasks.

  • East Marion IPHC en Español: Located at 900 Baldwin Avenue, Marion. They host a computer lab open Monday through Thursday from 8am to 9pm. Call 828-559-2189 for more details.
  • McDowell Library (Marion & Old Fort): Both primary library branches provide public computer access during their standard operating hours.
  • McDowell Senior Center: Located at 100 Spaulding Road, Marion, this lab is available specifically for adults aged 18 and older. They are open Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm, with extended hours on Tuesdays from 5pm to 8pm. Call 828-659-0821 to learn more.
  • McDowell Tech Community College Library: Located at 54 College Drive, Marion. Their facilities are open to the public Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm. Contact them at 828-652-6021.

How to Get a Device of Your Own

For long-term solutions, there are programs that can help you borrow or purchase a device at an affordable rate.

Local Lending Programs

  • McDowell County Public Library: If you have a library card, you can take advantage of their specialized device lending program. Contact the library directly at 828-652-3858 to learn what devices are currently available for checkout.

Low-Cost Purchasing Options

  • E2D: This organization assists families by providing low-cost computers to those who meet specific eligibility requirements. You can explore their programs at E2D or call 704-657-0408.
  • Everyoneon.org: A platform that connects qualifying individuals with low-cost computer and tablet purchasing options. Check their website directly to see if you meet the eligibility criteria.
  • Assurance Wireless: If you qualify, this program offers low-cost phones paired with free mobile service. Visit Assurance Wireless to review requirements and apply online.

Look for Digital Cafes in the future in areas that have limited or no broadband services. At Digital Cafes, you can access the internet or a device, charge your own device, or learn digital skills for FREE.
