Composting and Waste Reduction Survey

Man in blue hat squats down to show a child in a blue shirt the compost in a clear plastic plate. The child sits cross legged looking down at the worms, dirt, and egg shells. In the background are green worm composting bins and a raised bed for gardening.

The Understanding Composting and Waste Reduction Project

North Carolina A&T State Cooperative Extension is currently conducting a statewide survey on community perceptions of composting and waste reduction to help inform Extension programming and outreach efforts across North Carolina.

The survey takes approximately 10–15 minutes to complete and will help guide future efforts to improve composting education and resources.

Composting is the only way you can recycle at home, entirely on your own, and use the finished product in your garden. More than 25% of the typical home’s waste is yard trimmings and food scraps. Home composting is an effective way to reduce the amount of material sent to the landfill. McDowell County, NC does not operate a landfill, so all of the trash produced by residents is sent to a landfill outside of the county. McDowell County pays for this service by the pound, so an increase in recycling and/or home composting directly reduces trash disposal costs for tax payers. Thank you for doing your part to recycle and compost at home.
