Collapse ▲Looking to start a garden but not sure where to start? Are you a seasoned gardener looking for community and some new varieties to try out? There is a new resource in Henderson County that will benefit both new gardeners and seasoned gardeners alike. The Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC) seed library is open for all your seed and garden needs.
The library kicked off its new seed bank early this year in hopes of supplying the community with a free source of seeds. The library saw a great first few months, with many people in both the consumer and commercial industries utilizing the seed bank. The seed bank is free and easy to use. Simply sign out the seed that you intend to grow that season and start the seed at home. At the end of the season, save seed and return a portion to the library for others to use next season. Not sure how to save seed? There is also a networking and educational opportunity that goes along with being part of the seed library community.
Each month the library puts on a garden chat. This is an opportunity for members of the community to come together and talk about successes and struggles they may be facing in their gardens. Some meetings also include an educational program from local professionals and Extension Master Gardeners℠. These may include pest identification and management options or how to save seed from various crops. The meetings are free to attend and take place in the BRCC library where the seed library is housed. The next meeting is June 20th, 2023, and will focus on community building.
It may seem too late to be considering starting seeds in the area. This time of year, however, is a perfect time to start planning a fall garden. Fall gardens are a great option for those who maybe had too many baseball games or school activities to start a garden this spring. Planting cool season crops in late summer gives the gardener a season extension. Pest pressure is also minimized during later times of the year. Most insects are wrapping up their lifecycles for the year, decreasing the pressure on plants.
For those who have a garden in full swing, consider succession sowing. Many early crops will begin to tire out over the next few weeks. Succession sowing allows for prolonging harvest of many summer favorites. These may include squash and beans, among various other crops. The BRCC seed library is not the only seed bank getting started in the county. The Henderson County Public Library is also planning to roll out a new seed bank housed in the main branch in Hendersonville soon. This year the seed bank will remain housed in the main branch with hopes to spread to other libraries in the community next spring, bringing even more access to local seeds for the community, and giving families options to supplement their diet with healthy home-grown foods.
