Rutherford County Alternative Beef Production and Marketing Workshop

North Carolina Cooperative Extension Rutherford Center is hosting an alternative beef production and marketing meeting on Thursday evening, April 24, 2007. The meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. at the Extension Office located at 193 Callahan-Koon Road, Spindale.

Beef producers and anyone interested in alternative beef production and
marketing and looking at ways to improve the profit margin for farmers and beef
producers are invited to attend. The meeting is open to the public free of charge.
Please call the Extension Office at 287-6010 by April 18 to register.

Overview of a Successful Natural Beef Operation – Chase Hubbard, Assistant Farm Manager, Warren Wilson College

The Warren Wilson College Farm is located in the Swannanoa Valley, 10 miles east of Asheville.  They are a 275 acre mixed crop and livestock farm and raise grass finished beef and pastured pork, which they very successfully direct market to customers.

Overview of Local Markets and Buyer Demand for Specialty Beef – Peter Marks, Program Coordinator ,
Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project
ASAP is a non-profit organization that supports farmers and rural communities in the mountains of western North Carolina and the southern Appalachians by providing education, mentoring, promotion, web resources, and community and policy development. Peter will provide information about ASAP’s services, including the local Food Guide, the Appalachian Grown brand and many other services. He too will discuss the local demand for natural beef products and the types of consumers who want these products.

Overview of a Farmer’s Co-op and the Benefits of Collective Marketing –Casey McKissick & Meredith McKissick – Owners – Crooked Creek Farms – Old Fort Founding Members – Foothills Farmer’s Alliance (formerly the McDowell Farmer’s Alliance)
Casey and Meredith are founding members of Crooked Creek Farms providing natural farm products to Asheville and other area and of Foothills Farmer’s Alliance, a non-profit farmer’s marketing and educational organization working to connect foothills farmers with consumers across the region through direct marketing. The McKissick’s will discuss the growing demand for locally grown food products and the benefits of the co-op program as a way to market products collectively.

A Perspective: How Broadband Can Allow the NC Small Family Farm to Compete in a Global Economy Tim  Will ,  Executive Director,  Foothills Connect Business and Technology Center,
Foothills Connect was established in 2005 to support the development and growth of small businesses and entrepreneurship including those that are agriculture related in Rutherford County. It is one of seven e-NC Business and Technology Telecenters in the State.
Foothills is currently developing a brokerage project using Internet technology to enhance marketing opportunities for local producers by connecting them with chefs in cities including Charlotte.  Chefs have expressed a desire to purchase locally produced food products and Tim Will will provide an overview of the project.
