Missed the Mother's Day planting window? No problem! With June here and summer break just around the corner, now's your chance to get growing.
It's absolutely not too late to plant your own food. The soil is warm and ready, creating prime conditions for seeds and transplants. There’s nothing more rewarding than nurturing a plant from seed to harvest!
Summer annuals are perfect for planting now – your favorites like cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, zucchini, eggplant, peppers, green beans, and sweet corn. Many garden stores still have plenty of transplants and seeds available, so you can choose what works best for you.
Even if you have a small space or prefer less intensive gardening, container gardening is a fantastic option. You can grow a wide variety of vegetables and herbs right on your patio or deck. I, for one, can't wait to pluck fresh cherry tomatoes from my back deck for my salads or just a snack!
No time, energy, or desire to grow your own? There are several opportunities to buy locally grown produce. In fact, I stick to growing a few favorites, and rely on local farmers for the rest. McDowell County hosts weekly Tailgate Markets on Saturday. There are roadside stands as well as Community Supported Agriculture opportunities.
