N.C. Cooperative Extension in Swain County has received a $26,068 grant from Nantahala Health Foundation to fund the renovations for the N.C. Cooperative Extension inSwain County’s teaching kitchen.

Grant funds from Nantahala Health Foundation will be used to renovate and update the teaching kitchen which will offer additional educational workstations and allow us to serve a broader audience. With the renovation of the kitchen, it will increase preparation and cooking stations, dry storage, refrigerated and freezer storage. The addition of multiple cooking stations with allow opportunities to realize meaningful impacts on healthy eating nutritious meal planning, food safety, and proper cooking techniques. We also plan to support cottage industries through education and hospitality training.

According to Rob Hawk, County Extension Director, “These funds are essential in our effort to provide the research-based information to the citizens of Swain County. No other local organization connects the resources and expertise from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University and North Carolina State University directly to the public except for the N.C. Cooperative Extension in Swain County. This teaching kitchen project would not have been possible without the support from Swain County Government and from Nantahala Health Foundation.”

Working as a catalyst for innovation and collaboration, Nantahala Health Foundation seeks to partner with nonprofit organizations and governmental agencies in Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Jackson, Macon, Swain Counties, and the Qualla Boundary to achieve better health outcomes for all. By addressing the root causes of health inequities and improving social determinants of health, NHF works with regional change-makers to improve lives. Since its establishment in 2019, NHF has awarded nearly $1.75 million in support of more than 60 programs throughout the region.

We are looking forward to keeping the community updated on the progress of this project and look forward to serving our community. Please visit our website or contact us directly for more information at (828) 488-3848.
